Whether it's in Nairobi or in Kyiv, in Bristol or in Cairo: in all the major cities of Africa and Europe, people get together in dedicated spaces to dance to music and party – and create communities, subcultures and public spheres. Club culture is a global phenomenon, but what music are these people dancing to in these cities and what music did they use to dance to in the past? In what sort of spaces do they meet up? What public spheres do they form? What do these club cultures mean to the urbanity of a city? And what happens when the club music from two different continents meet head on? More...

Globally considered the deep house man of the moment, Vakula has gradually established himself as Ukraine's most demanded musical phenomenon. Konotop-native Mikhaylo Vityk gained international recognition in 2008 after a series of highly acclaimed releases on upfront electronic labels such as Meakusma and Dekmantel. Vakula recently launched his own vinyl-only imprint Leleka. All the while he's been regularly delivering sell-out EP's for committed labels and has just released two full-length albums under aliases Vedomir and V. His take on house music is heavily influenced by the rich history of the genre, with subtle jazz touches multiplied by unique and very personal attitude to sound design. Consequently Vakula became the first Ukrainian producer to hit the Resident Advisor series of podcasts with a mix consisting entirely of his own quality production.

The exchange for Johannesburg was curated by South African artist and self taught musician João Orecchia and Berlin based DJ Hannes Teichmann who facilitated the production phase.
