
On the occasion of our GOETHE FILMS series "The End of Truth," celebrating 100 years of German spy thrillers, we asked arts writer Andreas Lammers to investigate the origin story of uber-spy 007, who turns 100 this year. Here's his literary essay:
"The name is Bond, James Bond.“
"Welcome to our hotel, sir,“ the night manager said. "Please sign here, here, here and here, and enter your place and date of birth here and here. Just a formality. Thank you.“
Bond hesitated. Fake aliases, code names and regular recasts having long since become second nature to him, he could not quite remember his true identity. How old was he? What was his date of birth, not to mention the year? Where had he been born? Knowing that this scene would definitely not make it into either novel or director's cut, he scribbled indecipherably and returned the registration card. He would have to call Moneypenny.
