Man woman child apartment. Where "The Strange Little Cat" (premiere tonight, review to follow shortly) emits unspoken tensions, "The Police Officer’s Wife" isn’t short on actual domestic violence, showing a young family standing by as their lives unravel. As mother and daughter pull closer together, husband and wife and child and husband grow and come apart in the worst, but I fear common, way possible: through physical injury and pain and silence.
The polarizing film just played the
Venice Film Festival in Competition, where it won the Special Jury Award (from the likes of Bernardo Bertolucci and German actress Martina Gedeck) and where Düsseldorf filmmaker Philip Gröning announced his next film "Mein Bruder heißt Robert und ist ein Idiot" ("My brother's name is Robert and he's an idiot"), a story about "twins and time."
