Take a break from streaming films with some “cinema for your ears” as Goethe-Institut Toronto Program Curator Jutta Brendemühl introduces you to the best & brightest film composers in an ongoing video series called "The Sound Of Filmmusik" (takes 1-3 here), from Hollywood super star Hans Zimmer to 2020 Oscar winner Hildur Guðnadóttir.
In case you haven’t noticed over the past episodes of "The Sound of Filmmusik," premier league film scoring is a very male domain, but there's hope -- like Icelandic-born now longtime Berlin cellist Hildur Guðnadóttir, fresh off her Oscar, BAFTA, Emmy & Grammy wins:
And here are a few more female film composers who have been recognized with awards and commissions, like Annette Focks or Michaela Melián:
My latest discovery, who blew my mind in the Berlinale 2020 competition with her mammoth score to “Berlin Alexanderplatz”: Dascha Dauenhauer just turned 31 and is looking back on a 20+ year career. Can you say prodigy? She is now the 3rd female composer in its 60-year history to win a German Film Award, congratulations:
Stay tuned for more weekly episodes!
