DOK Leipzig is one of the world's leading --and oldest-- festivals for documentary and animation films, unique in combining the two disciplines in its festival history over the past 60 years. Founded in 1955 as the "1st All-German Leipzig Festival of Cultural and Documentary Films," it was the first independent film festival in East Germany, tolerated and eventually backed by the regime. As a Cold War creation, the festival became an important place of artistic exchange between filmmakers from East and West. Since then, every year at the end of October, the festival has been attracting more than 45,000 viewers and presents more than 300 films from all over the globe. Let's have a look at the beginnings:
