The Toronto International Film Festival (6-16 September, 2018) has revealed its full program, including many German films and co-productions. Sven Taddicken will see his THE MOST BEAUTIFUL COUPLE celebrate its world premiere at North America's biggest festival. Other titles by German directors were premiered at leading festivals in Venice, Cannes or Berlin and will have their North American premiere in Toronto.
ORIGINAL BLISS won two prizes in the competition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in 2016, while Sven Taddicken's new feature film will be beginning its festival journey in the Contemporary World Cinema sidebar in Toronto: in THE
MOST BEAUTIFUL COUPLE, Liv (Luise Heyer) and Malte (Maximilian Brückner) are forced to revisit their past when Malte spots the man, who sexually assaulted Liv two years ago. While Liv yearns for acceptance and healing, Malte is trying to fight the urge for revenge. But will their love survive?
Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck's NEVER LOOK AWAY about three periods in German history will be coming directly from Venice's Competition to the Special Presentations which are reserved for outstanding films by renowned directors. Paula Beer, who is part of the FACE TO FACE WITH GERMAN FILMS campaign, appears here in a lead role as well as in
Christian Petzold's TRANSIT, which is being shown in the Masters section.
The Wavelengths sidebar is dedicated to "daring, visionary and autonomous voices". This will be the showcase – after the world premiere in Cannes' Un Certain Regard – for
Ulrich Köhler's IN MY ROOM , where the lead character Armin wakes up one morning to find that mankind has disappeared. Wavelengths is also showing
two German shorts: ADA KALEH by Helena Wittmann –a world premiere– and A RETURN by James Edmonds.
In addition,
STYX by Wolfgang Fischer, which has been nominated for the European Parliament's LUX Film Prize, will be screening in Contemporary World Cinema alongside THE MOST BEAUTIFUL COUPLE as well as DONBASS by Sergei Loznitsa.
It had already been announced that Margarethe von Trotta's documentary SEARCHING FOR INGMAR BERGMAN will be the closing film of TIFF Docs, which also includes Werner Herzog's US production MEETING GORBACHEV.
