Part of a series of mini profiles on the movers and shakers that make the Berlinale one of the most important events in the international film calendar: the filmmakers, programmers, curators, industry promoters and visitors.
Name & role: Martin Scheuring, Project Coordinator & Short Films at German Films, the German film industry body; coordinates the market stands at Berlinale, TIFF and other international festivals.
This is my 14th Berlinale.
Biggest goal for this year’s Market: As every year -- not catching a cold and seeing more films.
Thing you dread most about the Berlinale: Each day the revolving door at Martin-Gropius-Bau, where the European Film Market takes place, reveals more about human intelligence –or lack thereof-- than I ever expected, but I’m also really scared of the crazy lining up at the Delphi and International cinemas.
Most important meeting you will have at the Berlinale: You never know in advance… actually most of the meetings are equally important, filmmakers, festivals, buyers, journalists. It’s great that we’re dealing with such a diverse group of people. But ok, maybe my meeting with the Weißwürste at the Bavarian reception two days before returning home to Munich might stand out a little.
German film you are most looking forward to seeing: Luckily, there are so many to choose from! Everyone who hasn’t had the chance yet should go see DIE ANDERE HEIMAT at the Lola screenings. It’s by far the best film from 2013 and already one of my all-time favourites. I’m also excited about many of the German feature debuts, for example I can’t wait to see the midnight screening of DER SAMURAI by Till Kleinert – he directed some excellent shorts.
