A NEW PLACE IN TOWN: Actopolis Apartment

One part of the ACTOPOLIS BELGRADE concept is making space, both mental and physical, for a much needed examination of the thriving self-organized community of cultural workers in Serbia. In line with this, project organizers have secured a new location - a rented apartment in the historic city district of Dorćol (36 Despot Stefan Boulevard) - for the entire month of May to serve as a playground for ACTOPOLIS BELGRADE participants.
Because so many disparate artists and cultural workers are engaged in the project, it was necessary to find a space cleared of context, one where it would be possible to bring together different audiences and showcase a range of diverse programs.

Finding a brand new location with limited infrastructure presented a challenge. In a dynamic city like Belgrade where new spaces are constantly opening, creating yet another venue that is unfamiliar to audiences and only intended for short-term use ran the risk of diminishing the impact of participants’ projects, and making programs less accessible for the public.

Conversely, the ACTOPOLIS BELGRADE organizers and participants have been able to exercise a great deal of freedom in their work when compared with other young initiatives. While the latter must regularly strive to reach a state of sustainability, the ephemeral nature of the Actopolis Apartment gives participants the opportunity to focus all of their energy on their projects and not be burdened with maintaining a more permanent space. And what more could one ask of a decent space, really?
