There were many surprises at this year’s Lolas, with major productions: “Krabat” and “The Baader Meinhof Complex” missing out on any awards. “John Rabe” turned out to be the big winner, with Lolas going to: Ulrich Tukur, for best actor, as well as awards for best set design, best costume design and best film.
“Wolke 9/Cloud 9” achieved two major awards, one for best director, Andreas Dresen and the other for best actress, Ursula Werner. The screenplay award went to Ozgur Yildrim for “Chiko”, which also won for editing. Supporting actress went to Sophie Rois for “Der Architekt/The Architect” and supporting actor went to Andreas Schmidt for “Fleisch ist mein Geműse/Meat is my vegetable”.
In other awards, “Nordwand/North Face” won Lolas for sound design and cinematography. Best musical score went to Niki Reiser for “Im Winter Ein Jahr/A Year Ago in Winter”. Best documentary was awarded to “Nobody’s Perfect” by Niko von Glasow, while best children or youth film went to “Was am Ende Zählt/Nothing Else Matters” by Julia von Heinz

Digressing slightly at either the Melb Como or Kino I was fortunate to pickup a copy of the Deutschland Magazine No 6/2008 Dec/Jan which had some great coverage on the German film industry and some of the films in this years festival. For 6 issues a year for €16 for international subscribers very tempted to subscribe. Website link www.magazine-deutschland.de
"Meat is my vegetable" is the adaptation of an autobiographical novel with the same title by the comedian/musician Heinz Strunk who is pretty popular in Germany.
It is a quirky comedy with a very black, almost malicious, sense of humour and is not related to "The Invention of the Curried Sausage" at all.
Together with "John Rabe" and especially "North Face" it is one of the best recent German films which were NOT shown in this year's festival.
