About this blog

To celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Brothers Grimm’s book of fairy tales, the Goethe-Institut New Zealand, in association with the New Zealand Listener and the International Institute of Modern Letters, Victoria University of Wellington, invited New Zealanders to write a Grimm fairytale for modern Aotearoa New Zealand.

The entrants were asked to work with local or international folktale elements, but to avoid a simple retelling of well-known tales from the world’s great mythologies – such as those involving Maui or Zeus or Odin. They were however encouraged to update and relocate one of the famous Grimm stories, such as Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, Snow White, Rumpelstiltskin, Hansel and Gretel, Cinderella . . .

The story had to begin with the words “Once upon a time . . .”
We received over 300 wonderful entries which we would like to share with you. We will publish one story per day and would love to hear your feedback to help us to identify the 12 best liked fairytales that will go into a print publication at the end of the year.

We look forward to hearing from you.
