Foreign language holdings at-hand, corresponding to the ethnic make up of the population, are supplemented through exchange items from the main library. These exchange items (encompassing 50 languages) are available to all branches according to need and are kept current. In addition to the content, the demographic development of the readership must also be taken into consideration.
The work-intensive maintenance of exchange materials is managed in the main library.
For example, there hasn’t been German immigration to Queens for many years; migration from countries in which Bengali is spoken is very high. That means: purchase a smaller amount of media that address the interests of older German readers, and a larger volume of media acquisitions in Bengali for a young readership.
