Publication on Multicultural Communication

The American Library Association (ALA) released information yesterday about a new publication: Increasing Relevance, Relationships and Results: Principles & Practices for Effective Multicultural Communication—Library Edition. The 40 page paper also defines the basic principles for effective multicultural communication, and emphasizes the meaning of the contribution of a multicultural community in social change. The library release of this paper from the Metropolitan Group shows how the defined principles of communication can be implemented in the everyday activities of a library.

Gerade zurück aus Hamm vom vierteljährlichen Treffen der DBV-Expertengruppe "Interkulturelle Bibliotheksarbeit" möchte ich kurz auf ein success-story-video auf youtube hinweisen. Es geht um ein so genanntes Recruting-Video, mit dem die Queens Library um Personal mit multikulturellem Hintergrund wirbt.

Bei unserem zweitägigen Treffen in Hamm waren sich alle Anwesenden einig, dass eine erfolgreiche interkulturelle Bibliotheksarbeit nur mit entsprechendem Personal erreicht werden kann. Was meint, dass auch im Bibliotheksbereich Anreiz-Strukturen geschaffen werden müssen, die die Ausbildungsberufe und Studiengänge auch für multinationale Bewerberinnen und Bewerber attraktiv machen.

Die Expertengruppe wird über gezielte Maßnahmen spätestens in ihrer nächsten Amtperiode beraten.

I had nearly forgotten:

A wonderful, stimulating exhibition on the International Year of Languages is on view at the United Nations. It presents the development of translation practices within the United Nations. The English subtitle of the presentation says: faciliating communication among nations!

p.s. During the tour the UN staff member told us about the Web site "www.freerice.com". I won’t say more, see for yourself!
