Today we practiced, practiced, practiced! The library staff has tried all the variants our check-out software offers: we issued library cards to new patrons; replaced lost cards; and went through check-outs, returns and renewals; renewals by telephone; placing holds and removing them….We’re still in the training stage, but the number of books we’ve practiced on is roughly the same that we circulate in the course of a normal day. On top of which, all of our Goethe-Institut colleagues also receive a new library card, and perhaps by tomorrow they’ll be borrowing things, so that we can “go live”.
And our weekly e-mail newsletter went out today, announcing our re-opening.
So everything is ready. But we still have to move one of the shelves, our interior designers are still at work, and in all probability a number of small details we neglected will provide us with a few surprises next Tuesday. We’ll just overlook the fact that we had a major slow-down with our computers this morning, and that jobs sent to our network printers landed at the wrong stations. The main thing is that the internet is still functioning, otherwise our catalogue disappears.
