The most promising ways of mitigating climate change are improvement of energy efficiency and development of renewable energy. As for the latter, the National Energy Strategy of Russia suggests an increase in the share of renewables up to 4.5 % by 2020 in overall electricity production (comparing to current 1% levels). However, many experts believe that almost 20 % of energy consumption in Russia could be covered by non-conventional sources of energy.
