A further measure for continually increasing the number of bicycle riders in urban areas is to create bicycle paths. Until recently, there were only a few marked bicycle routes, which in addition were often not respected and on which bicycle “newbies” did not feel safe. Now there is a separate bicycle route on one of Mexico City’s main axes, the magnificent boulevard
Paseo de Reforma, which leads directly into the city centre. Unfortunately, at this time it is the only one of its kind, with a present length of about seven kilometres. But the bicycle path is welcomed by both the city’s inveterateand new cyclists, as travelling by bicycle is faster than with buses or one’s own car during the rush hours.
