Documentary film-maker Ke Chin-yuan – a documentarist lending the environment a voice

Starting in the 1980’s, the Taiwanese documentary film-maker Ke Chin-yuan has been recording Taiwan’s natural environment and the catastrophes connected with it in film. He was born in 1962 in the district of Shengang near Changhua, and grew up in one of Taiwan’s peripheral regions. He therefore had no difficulty “choosing a life path that was completely different from those of other classmates who were also active in journalism.” In field studies, camera in hand, he continually documented Taiwan’s natural environment, changes in the environment and consequently the disasters bound up with them.

The Scattered Hotel - Promoting sustainable tourism in the historical hearts of Italy's towns and villages.

I discovered my first albergo diffuso in 2007. It was hidden behind a big, old, wooden door that opened into a wonderful courtyard of lemon trees, herbs and rose bushes. The building, an XVIII century manor house, had been converted into a hotel, which is managed by two generations of descendants from the original family. An albergo diffuso – loosely translated as scattered hotel – is born out of existing houses, apartments or even stables, which are renovated or converted to serve their new function. The philosophy behind the scattered hotel is that it should merge seamlessly into, not only the existing architecture, but also the local culture and customs.

Los glaciares, ¿están protegidos?

Cada año concurren a la Argentina muchos turistas que tienen como destino, entre otros, los glaciares patagónicos. El 22 de Octubre del 2008, el Congreso de la Nación Argentina sancionó la Ley de Presupuestos mínimos para la protección de Glaciares y el Ambiente Periglacial, la misma prohíbe la liberación de contaminantes y la explotación minera en los glaciares y periglaciares, con el objetivo de preservarlos como reservorio de recursos hídricos, tanto para el consumo humano, agrícola, hidrográfico, como así también para la protección de la biodiversidad, como fuente de información científica y atractivo turístico.

A warning about global warming: fashion designer Shao Yen Chen’s installation “Flowering Paper Trees”

For the 2011DesignExpo in Taiwan, Shao Yen Chen, a Taiwanese fashion designer living in the U.K., not only brought along “The Goddess,” his most recent work from his series of knitted art works, but at the express invitation of the Expo, he also exhibited a conceptual installation in the Ecology exhibition area that consisted of several “Flowering Paper Trees,” thereby creating a complete surface that seemed to be made up of white Christmas trees. His intention was to draw the public’s attention to global warming.

The Forêt d’Anguédédou forest, a natural conservancy reserve, is endangered.
Abandoned wells, houses shooting up out of the ground like mushrooms, felled trees … the Forêt d’Anguédédou, a natural conservancy forest located between the Maison d’Arrêt et de Correction d’Abidjan, the largest prison of the economic hub on the Ivory Coast and the northern highway, is in the process of being destroyed. The situation is alarming. Illegal timber dealers are cutting down trees. Factories discharge their untreated waste water here, and economic actors from the real estate industry are building their homes here,“ is the bitter assessment of Maméry Koné, personal consultant to the Minister of Forestry.
