In the spirit of cross-culturalism, we thought we’d share with you an event featuring American literature in Germany. Superstar author Jonathan Franzen made his German-language debut on April 22 with a talk enticingly titled “Sex, Literatur und die deutsche Sprache”, reading from the German translation of his latest novel, The Discomfort Zone: A Personal History.

Appearing at Berlin’s Temporäre Kunsthalle, Franzen purportedly charmed his audience with his accent and easy-going performance. And he was received by a group of fans who had the pleasure of reading Die Korrekturen in German a few years back.
The reading was one of the events complementing the exhibit Die Sprache Deutsch and was organized by the Goethe-Institut. Franzen will remain in Germany for a few months to finish up his new work, it was reported.
