The 2009 PEN Translation Fund Grants were recently announced, and among the translators chosen is Chantal Wright, who submitted English versions of poems from Eine Handvoll Wasser ("A Handful of Water") by Tzveta Sofronieva. Sofronieva, who studied with Joseph Brodsky, was born in Sofia, Bulgaria, and in the mid-1990s initiated the "Forbidden Words" network, a project on "the memory of words in multilingualism". She writes in German, Bulgarian and English and received the 2009 Adelbert-von-Chamisso Fellowship Prize, awarded to non-German-born authors writing in the German language, along with Maria Cecilia Barbetta.
Author and translator will be in New York on Tuesday, May 19, for the 2009 PEN Literary Awards, held at CUNY Graduate Center's Elebash Recital Hall.
