We've just gotten word that the Marvell Repertory Theatre (founded 2010) will be staging a new, English-language production of Arthur Schnitzler's 1912 play,
Professor Bernhardi, starting next week. The
Marvell Rep website describes its 2012 season as featuring "five plays and one musical, all of which have been banned or burned, stirred controversy, sparked riots, landed their casts in jail, and remain incendiary to this day." Banned in early 1900s Austria due to its portrayal of antisemitism in Viennese society,
Professor Bernhardi is the story of a Jewish doctor in a private clinic who becomes the subject of a witch hunt after denying a dying woman last rites from her Catholic priest. A 2005 revival in London was met with
critical acclaim. Stay tuned for information about other upcoming productions from Marvell Rep soon.
