The PEN American Center Translation Fund, established in 2003, annually awards grants of between $2000 and $3000 to translators working on a book-length project of fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, or drama that has not previously appeared in English. The submission need not be from a work under contract, and the track record of the grants is a good one: 35 of the 61 granted projects have been published.
This year's list of grantees includes translator Daniel Brunet's submission from Das letze Feuer, ("The Last Fire"), a play by Dea Loher that explores the devastating effect on a small community of the accidental death of a child. Following its premiere in Hamburg, Das letze Feuer won both the 2008 Play of the Year award from Theater Heute and the 2008 Mülheim Drama Prize.
The Goethe-Institut Library holds copies of Loher's short stories and several of her plays.
