Creative Reading - Literature Workshops for Children

German-speaking children's book authors and Lebanese counterparts are conducting literature workshops for children and young people in different libraries in Lebanon. The workshop participants are writing about their experiences in this weblog.

Zahle/Beirut: Presentation of workshop results, Saturday 17/11/2007

Zahle: Fifth and last day of our workshop, 16/11/2007

It is our last day, and we want to make the cover for our book. But first we summarize the story. Is everything clear? It is funny to hear the children re-tell the story in Arabic. They all over-go each other and I am no longer sure that I get all the details.

Bint Jbeil Workshops reviewed by Samira Khoury

I. Preamble

This is an executive summary of the workshops held at the public library in Bint Jbeil. They were creative meetings, as the Arabic translation indicated, and included reading, writing, drawing/painting, photography, and of course, discussion/ dialogue. Detailed documentation is available on video. Participants numbered between 14-21 children (2/3 of them girls), age 12-14, from three governmental schools. Additionally, many teachers and parents were interested and took part as involved observers. The coordinators were the authors Samira N. Khoury and Manfred Theisen, the librarian Rima Sharara and the translator Joseph Salloum.

II. Activities

Monday: BREAKING THE ICE: Manfred opened the workshops with a dynamic exercise engaging the participants collectively at first, and then individually. They enjoyed reporting what they do on a typical Friday: a day of vacation, free from “study exhaustion” as they said. A day set aside for fun, visits, picnics, games and READING…or more specifically, visiting the library. Perhaps they considered the library an “outing” because it is the center of all cultural activities.

Zahle: Fourth day of our workshop, Thursday 15/11/2007

Today, we plan to do most of the remaining art work for our book. We will be very busy, because there are still many scenes, which need to be illustrated. Nadine and I have done some homework and developed a story, which combines all our characters, topics and activities so far and which includes the ideas and solutions, the children have come with during the past days. We agreed to divide the children into several groups in order to finish the illustrations for as many scenes as possible, incorporating all art techniques we have worked with so far. (Pencils, water colour, collage, photography)

Zahle: First day of our workshop, Monday 12/11/2007

Today, my Lebanese colleague Nadine Touma and I arrived early at the public library in Zahlé, a town about 50 km east of Beirut. Our plan is to create a picture book with 12 children between 7 and 9 years of age. They are from a public school in Zahlé, and we have one week together, three to four hours every day. Nadine and I agreed beforehand to work with the topic FEAR. And although we have prepared a skeleton for the workshop, everything can happen and we are curious what sort of a book the children will create under our guidance.
