How does Kuala Lumpur celebrate?

The night was still young when a roar of cheers erupted suddenly from outside my apartment windows. The cheers came from the rental units around me including the coffee shops in the distance. This was followed by a series of firecrackers going off. I did not have the TV on but I knew what had just happened: our Malaysian under-23 football team had just won the final match against Indonesia in the recent South East Asian Games. If there is one thing that can keep us excited in KL then it is a good sporting event that involves a Malaysian team. There aren’t a lot of world class athletes from Malaysia, but the ones we have get their full support from the whole country.

Apart from politics and football, traffic congestion is also a good conversation starter in Kuala Lumpur. Is traffic congestion really that bad you may ask? Most of the residents here would agree that we do have a serious traffic problem. It is not only the slow moving traffic, it is also the parking problems, reckless drivers, road bullies, unreliable public transport, and many more facets to this topic; and yet, so far it has not deterred us from jumping into our cars and getting right into the jams on every single day just to get to our destinations, whether for work or for fun.

“Never judge a book by its cover.” That's what we've been told. Nonetheless, we judge and stereotype people all the time, unconsciously! Research shows that we can't escape from using our brain's crude stereotypes and other mental shortcuts to make decisions. What we wear can sometimes be the strongest expression of our own identity. At the same time, dressing can become a form of disguise to shield us from our true identity as well. So what do we wear in Kuala Lumpur? Obviously, there is no specific Kuala Lumpur style, especially since we have such a mix of ever so many different cultures in one country.

The KLCC (Kuala Lumpur City Centre or Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre) and the Petronas Twin Towers are the emblems of Malaysia’s modernity and success.

The glass and steel façades stand out menacingly in the centre of the ‘Golden Triangle’, as they are catching our eyes from almost every corner of the city. Inside there are offices for multinational companies and a luxurious upper-class shopping mall, the Suria (= the sun) KLCC.

Formerly, the site was used by the Selangor Turf Club, a racing course where nouveau riche and would-be millionaires came to chase their dreams. Today, behind the great towers there is the KLCC Park, an exquisitely manicured garden – was designed by the Brazilian landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx – that is populated on weekends or holidays by migrant workers who flock to the KLCC Park in order to relax from their long working week. They too are chasing after their dreams.
