Sunday evening, 10 o clock in the evening: I am watering a handful of rice, some chick peas, a glass of crashed wheat, and some beans (in short: everything I could find on the kitchen shelf ...). The mix will soak over night, and tomorrow I will cook it together with loads of sugar, nuts, dried fruits, like figs and apricot, I some fresh fruits, too – pomegranate and orange respectively, and – very important – rose water! What for all this?

Istanbul: On the Intermingling of Fashion and Politics
'Long gone are the days when distinct or traditional clothing made our cultures recognizable' ??? Not when it comes to Turkey! Istanbul provides ground for a case study: The headscarf – an expression of culture? Of religion? A political symbol? … Fashion??? An everlasting topic in any case.

Istanbul: Fragments of Culture (s)
Mhhhhhmmmm...
What to write about 'culture' in my city? The sociologist inside me is confused. (Well, that's her job.) Culture ... what does the term actually mean?

Who are we?
Who are 'we'? And who are 'they'?
Tomorrow, on June 12, the country will flock to the bullet boxes again and - no doubt! - the fault lines run deep in this country.

Istanbul – Destroy it, and build it up again?!
In fact, summing up Istanbul's treasury of cultural and historic variety is unmanageable. Starting from the big historical empires – Byzantine, Roman, and Ottoman – over the multitude of minorities more or less influential during Ottoman times – namely Greeks, Armenians, French, Germans, Genoese, Levantines, Spanish and Sephardic Jews – to all those uncountable ethnic groups (Kurds, Laz, Syrians, Pomaks, Zaza, Roma ..) and immigrants (Africans, Arabs, Eastern European and Asian people) which found their way to the city in more recent times … They all shaped it, they all left their footsteps in terms of specific lifestyles, architecture, spiritual places and cultural festivities.

Istanbul – Or who is the trashiest?!
Trash, waste, rubbish … when discussing this month's topic with a friend we could not help ourselves thinking that this article must necessarily result in cliches: Side boards overloaded with rubbish; empty bottles and leftovers in the streets, plastics, paper and other industrial waste in the backyards … Is it really like that in our city?

Istanbul: Prudish, or just schizophrenic?
Wednesday morning, breakfast time: I quickly skim through the first pages of my beloved tabloid paper “Posta” ... passing by the crime scenes ... leaving the high society section behind … Yep .. there it is, my favorite good morning lecture: Page 14 – solely devoted to love, relationship problems and sexuality ...

Going local in Istanbul?!
And before you can say knife another month is over again ... Hard to believe, but it has already been more than five weeks that I occupied my small island home for the first time. 'Home' – it already feels like that! Renovation finished so far and I dutifully established routine life again, i.e. sitting and writing my thesis.
