From January through December 2011, these were the parameters for a playground of diverse, fascinating, vibrant tales: Responding individually to a collective impetus, a host of hand-picked young bloggers uploaded photos, texts, and multimedia. Every month, they were given a new theme. Step by step, they created a kaleidoscope of impressions, opinions, ideas and… plain fun.

Sydney: Hey big spender!



It's perhaps not one of the most obviously expensive cities, but Sydney is right up there in terms of high living costs.

In fact, only six other cities in the world are considered pricier than Sydney and it's often the younger generation who feel these costs.

Accused of just being lazy or leeching off their parents, in reality many young Sydneysiders simply can't afford to live out of home, as blogger Jennifer Lush explains.

Sydney: The veggie patch is back in fashion!

But amidst the numerous national parks, an interesting aspect of Sydney's garden is a move toward more sustainable living.

Sydney: Culturally awkward?

Sydney seems to distance itself from the arts. An art scene definitely exists, but almost takes itself too seriously. Plays are performed in theatres, art hung in galleries, music performed in concert halls. There's a lack of the impromptu and open.

Sydney: Us and them- the vexed issue of 'boatpeople'

'Leaky boats', 'queue jumpers', 'Christmas Island crises' and 'getting tough on border protection' are just some of the quick quips and 30-second sound bytes surrounding the issue of asylum seekers arriving in Australia by boat.

For a country built on immigration it's surprising just how many Australians seem to have lost their understanding of and empathy for people leaving war torn countries.

In covering this month's topic blogger Jennifer Lush compares the way 'boatpeople' are presented in the Australian media, with the tale of Mohamad*, a man who fled persecution in Afghanistan on a fishing boat.

Sydney: Now and then

Sydney doesn't have a terribly long history... but that's not to say nothing has changed!

From the first settlers, to immigration to Indigenous rights, key points in Sydney's history are marked in the city's spaces and buildings and the way in which these spaces and buildings have developed over time.

This month, blogger Jennifer Lush takes us on a tour of some of Sydney's most iconic places, looking at how they were then... and now.

Sydney: Reduce, reuse, recycle

Recycling is something Sydneysiders don't tend to think much about, but nevertheless do well. The 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) are drummed into us from a young age, and between school excursions to the tip to colour-coded bins it's hard not to know how to recycle properly.

For this month's topic blogger Jennifer Lush went down to her local recycling plant, Kimbriki Tip, to talk about Sydneysiders' waste habits with employee of 12 years Pen Jacobs.
