Welcome to the Goethe-Institut CityScapes Blog.
12 cities
36 artists
12 themes
From January through December 2011, these were the parameters for a playground of diverse, fascinating, vibrant tales: Responding individually to a collective impetus, a host of hand-picked young bloggers uploaded photos, texts, and multimedia. Every month, they were given a new theme. Step by step, they created a kaleidoscope of impressions, opinions, ideas and… plain fun.
This project has now ended. If you like what you see, you may want to check out the brand new CityTales Comic Blog.
Just one question: Did they say "boring" or "bonding"? I was surprised and amazed how many people seemed to answer "boring", but the last one apparently said "bonding", which makes more sense, so I am not sure if I got the first ones right.
lol... Joe , i made this video without the intention of finding only interesting characters who would give me the answer or reaction I want. These are people (working class and students) who obligated to be part of my recording. They are found only on the day of my recording, and as real as I can get them to be (though I can't say they all stand for the entire mindset of Singaporeans).
I think it's interesting how you sensed and referenced these people somewhat look as dull as the "boring" replies many of them made...
no one said "beautiful!" or "joyful" the video is terrible as it surveys a prescribed view of SEX through one word, one night stand and one long shot of the red light district ??
urbanites must wake up to what is SEXUALITY on their own before examining the noun.
This video was done with live interview of people I found on the street and a group of students.
David, U didn't hear it wrongly. Most replied "boring", except for a young student whom replied "bonding".
Xynn, to make a video within 3 mins, it's impossible for me to encapsulate the entire subject of "Sexuality" in Singapore . What I am trying however to do is to invite an open interpretation (context) of what sex means to us singaporean.
this video isn't meant to make a judgement, or evaluation of what sexuality means.. Rather it offers you an insight (at the very least) to see into the minds of these interviewed Singaporeans, in corresponds to the environment (red light district) in a very real setting which exist in Singapore till today.
And the way, some of the replies if I remembered clearly are "good", "bonding", "Colourful", "love". what better way to describe "beautiful" or "Joyful" than the these words?
it is impressive how many times the word "conservative" came up! I mean, in a country as ultra-modern as Singapore, I'd rather expect that people are more open and free minded about sex! well, but I know that Singaporeans are not American and I cannot expect them to express themselves (sexually) as free as people in new york. anyway, this is a very nice video, like it!
Great work Skye. The sum of the one-word answers hints at the complexity of the topic. The individual snippets make up a collection of intimate moments. This is more meaningful than a hundred surveys with thousands of participants.
Hi Jochen.. glad you enjoyed the video. You have brilliantly describe what I hope project in this video. In my opinion, the one-answers open up to the possibilities of interpretation, mindset regarding the topic. It is indeed complex, but at the same time, it helps one to form a certain understanding based on the context of the subject rather than using logic, moral values, or any other social standards including stereotypes.
It is easy to make a quick judgement, and as an artist myself, I do realize the danger of self-indulgence in personal expression. We are bombarded by television and manipulated media on a daily basis. What I hope I achieve here, is to offer my audience a chance to make up a personal "experience" or understanding of the sex topic in Singapore. Some things are best left not described, but to experience.
In June 2011, a selection of CityScapes bloggers attended the Asia-Pacific Urban Forum (APUF) in Bangkok, reporting live for the UN through CityScapes.

Well done.

there was many many "borings" - the people looked dull to me too. or they have been over marketed by TRIUMPH bra ads at bus stops.
only one girl said "bonding" with 2 fingers touching.
