Ha Noi Culture: Inside my family

Yesterday I got a new “ao dai” – the traditional dress of Vietnamese women. I really wanted to take a photo of me in the ao dai with my whole family, including my grandfathers, my parents, and my brothers. Eventually I got the photo. The background of the photo is a vase of lotus and a tea pot on the table. It is a nice photo. But it was very difficult for me to gather all the members of the family for that photo. The Culture of Singapore Culture

One of my favourite places to go in Singapore is the Esplanade, our leading performing arts venue that hosts everything from art installations to concerts to musicals to plays. In November, it will even stage American director Sam Mendes' production of Richard III, with Oscar winner Kevin Spacey in the title role. But highbrow and high-profile performances aside, you can always catch a free concert, such as this jazz performance I saw the other day.

Hanoi: Center of classical Vietnamese culture?

The trouble with culture is always that no one can precisely define it. Culture - what is that actually? Are centuries-old poems culture, even if hardly anyone knows them today? Or is Vietnamese pop music culture? Meeting with friends and family, is this not just as much a part of Hanoi culture as museums are? Or maybe even more culture - popular culture.

Hanoi likes to consider itself the cultural center of the country. After all, the city did become the capital 1,000 years ago. After such a long time, of course, a lot of culture accumulates. And over the course of history Hanoians were true masters in absorbing cultural influences from outside, and making them their own. Other countries and cities may have looked askance at the "foreign" and stewed in their own juices. As far as I can see that was rarely the case in Hanoi.

To describe Indonesian culture in a few words is simply impossible, because it is as diverse as the 13 000 islands this archipelago consists of. Coffee's History in Jakarta

“Culture and my City - What goes up and what comes down?”
While some cities perceive the arts and culture as their unique selling point and an important factor in the definition of quality of life, other cities and their inhabitants seem to largely neglect them. What is it that my city sees as its own culture and how do the urban dwellers participate?

Jakarta's consistency in drinking coffee is unquestionable. From the very traditional form, into its current adaptation of the globalized “café” trend, we can consider it a culture of its own, complete with its evolution over time. Finding coffee physically intolerable myself, I'm asking a writer-cum-urban-activist Rika Febriyani to initialize our proto-intervention on this culture. PS: This is the first of following series, where I no longer have “agents” running around, substituted by “partner[s]-in-crime” instead, where I discuss possibilities of a topic, since the initiation stage of an idea.
